Breadcrumbs that know which collection matters.
Shopify shows one collection in a product's breadcrumb. Breadcrumbs & Categories decides which one with a seven-rule system, and turns your subcollections into a real nested tree.

Deepest collection
Use whichever eligible collection sits furthest down the tree.
Same product, two different breadcrumbs.
Most Shopify products sit in more than one collection. Left alone, Shopify shows whichever one it fetched first. We don't leave it alone.
Default Shopify
Home / Clearance / Bergen Sofa
"Clearance" was simply the first collection Shopify's storefront API returned, not the one that helps a shopper understand the catalog.
With Breadcrumbs & Categories
Home / Furniture / Living Room / Bergen Sofa
The rule engine walks the product's collections in priority order and picks the one that actually orients the shopper.
Seven rules pick a winner, top to bottom.
Every rule is checked in order until one of them finds a valid collection to show. Direct /products/ URLs skip straight to rule 3, since there's no visitor path or storefront context to follow.
Follow the visitor's path
Uses the collection the shopper navigated through to reach this product.
Storefront context
Reads the collection from the current URL, or a remembered valid one.
Custom breadcrumb
An exact path saved by hand for one specific product.
Default collection
The collection you've marked as this product's preferred automatic path.
Deepest collection
Whichever eligible collection has the most parent levels in your tree.
Tree order
If depth ties, whichever collection appears first in your tree.
Shopify's own order
Final tie-breaker: the first collection Shopify itself returns.
Nest your collections, and the tree does the rest.
Build a real hierarchy, Furniture, then Living Room, then Sofas, and the deepest, most specific collection wins the breadcrumb automatically.
Pet
Shop by subcollection, straight from your theme editor — no code required.
Both layouts pull from the exact same collection tree that drives your breadcrumbs — switch between them any time from the theme editor, no code required.

Questions merchants actually ask.
What's the difference between Free and Essential?
It comes down to how advanced breadcrumbs (rules 3 and 4, custom paths and default collections) get applied. On Free, all seven rules still run, but custom and default paths are limited to a catalog-based allowance; products, collections, and pages outside that allowance fall back to the automatic rules only. Essential removes the cap and applies your Category Tree and custom paths across the entire store automatically.
Does it work with Vintage (legacy) themes?
Yes. Vintage themes need code added by hand rather than receiving updates automatically, so we keep the Vintage implementation current ourselves and let you know when it changes.
Will this slow down my storefront?
The breadcrumb path is calculated from your existing collection data with no extra calls to third-party services, so there's no meaningful added load time.
Can I just set a breadcrumb manually and skip the rules entirely?
Yes. A custom breadcrumb saved for a product is checked at rule 3, ahead of every automatic rule, so it always wins. On Free it draws from your catalog-based allowance; on Essential it's unlimited across the whole store.
What happens to a collection I use only for internal filtering?
If it's included in your category tree it's eligible to appear in a breadcrumb like any other collection. Remove it from the tree and it's excluded from path resolution entirely.
How is priority support different from standard support?
Standard support (Free plan) replies within about 2 business days. Priority support (Essential plan) replies faster, within 4 to 12 hours, every day of the week.
